Guillaume Sergent | 1er Cru Extra Brut | Le Chemin Des Chappes | Champagne, FR | 2020
The Sergent family boasts a rich vine-growing legacy in the Vrigny region, dating back to at least the mid-nineteenth century. Traditionally, they produced and bottled wines at the local cooperative, carrying the Roger Sergent label. Guillaume's father built a loyal following until 2008 when Guillaume and his brother assumed control of the family estate. In the typical fashion of generational transitions, the family holdings were divided. Guillaume retained approximately 1.5 hectares, while his brother, who now supplies fruit to Moët, received the remaining 2 hectares.
A 50/50 Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier blend from 2 parcels in Vrigny: Les Grands Chemins – an east-facing plot with sandy soils planted in 1972 and Les Chappes – a west facing plot with silty soils, planted in 1982 (next to Egly Ouriet’s parcels). Vinification in 228L and 500L oak barrel, dosage generally under 5g/L.
