With holdings both in Sancerre and the nearby Coteaux du Giennois appellation, Bertrand Graillot produces wines which combine typicity and individuality in highly appealing fashion.

Situated immediately northeast of Sancerre, the Coteaux du Giennois appellation encompasses just 180 planted hectares (Sancerre has 2,600 hectares) on gentle slopes flanking the Loire on both sides. Bertrand owns three parcels of Sauvignon Blanc in the Coteaux du Giennois—planted in 2004, 2007, and 2012, respectively—in soils alternatingly calcareous, sandy, and flinty.

Although he has not yet sought certification, Bertrand has worked organically since the beginning. He harvests primarily by hand, and is moving toward 100% manual harvesting.

Domaine de l’Estang’s Coteaux du Giennois Blanc ferments naturally without thermoregulation and ages for two full years on its fine lees in a combination of steel and fiberglass tanks, and Bertrand adds less than 50 milligrams per liter of sulfur during the elevage. Its rich and inviting aromatics speak to Bertrand’s emphasis on fully ripe fruit—this is no citrus-bomb laser beam—and its palate grips gently and slathers the tongue with palpable density and notable dry extract. Still, this is a highly digestible and harmonious wine, softened and deepened through its lengthy lees contact but still offering precise minerality.

Made with Organic Grapes

Gally's tip: Great way to get Sancerre styled Sauvignon Blanc for less while also being Organic and hand harvested.
